In this short article, we aim to demystify some of the complexities around 3Shape TRIOS Licencing for high street clinics and practitioners.
Introduction of TRIOS CARE and TRIOS ONLY
In 2022, along with the launch of TRIOS 5, 3Shape introduced TRIOS CARE and TRIOS ONLY options to replace the previously mandatory TRIOS Subscription which was also known as CliniCare.
CliniCare was a mandatory annual subscription that granted the TRIOS owner to a licence to access the software, software updates including new features, support from the reseller and support from 3Shape for a twelve month period. If this was not paid, the licence would stop working.
The introduction of the option of TRIOS CARE and TRIOS ONLY was intended to eventually supersede TRIOS ClinicCare. These new options were initially reserved only for new customers of TRIOS scanners with the option for legacy users to choose either of these after remaining on TRIOS CliniCare for a further two years.
TRIOS ONLY is a zero fee option. The software remains active with the user having full access to the software. This is an overview of what the user with TRIOS ONLY is entitled to:
Ongoing software upgrades (without new features)
Paid support from 3Shape
No hardware warranty
No replacement facility

TRIOS CARE is a paid option. The user being required to pay an annual fee to access this service. Users with an active TRIOS CARE Subscription are entitled to:
Ongoing software upgrades, including new features
Ongoing support from 3Shape
Hardware warranty (up to 5 years max)
Accidental Damage Replacement (up to 3 claims over a maximum of 5 years period)
Replacement facility (up to 5 years max)

Annual one-2-one training with 3Shape trainers
Some key points to note:
All new TRIOS Users are provided with 1 year free access to TRIOS CARE. At the end of this period, you have the option to choose to opt for TRIOS ONLY or continue with another year of TRIOS CARE.
If you have opted for TRIOS ONLY, you can opt for TRIOS CARE at any point in the future. Please note that the warranty options will not be available immediately if you take this option.
In late 2022, all TRIOS ClinicCare users should have been migrated to TRIOS CARE CONVERTED which was essentially the same licence type. In order to have the option to opt for TRIOS ONLY, you would have had to remain on TRIOS CARE CONVERTED for a further two annual renewal cycles. It follows that from late 2024, all TRIOS users should have the option to convert to TRIOS ONLY.
The options laid out only apply to commercial TRIOS users. This does not apply to Education licences or TRIOS Clinic / Studio Apps such as Implant Studio, Clear Aligner Studio, TRIOS Design Studio. These continue to have mandatory ongoing annual subscriptions.
